In short
What L70, L80 and B-values mean for linear LED luminaire lifetime, and how to plan maintenance for commercial lighting.

LEDs rarely fail suddenly. Instead, their light output slowly falls over time. Lifetime figures describe how quickly that happens.
L-values
L80 means the luminaire still gives at least 80% of its initial output. L70 means 70%. A figure such as "L80 at 50,000 hours" tells you when the output is expected to fall to that level.
B-values
B-values describe how many luminaires may fall below the L-value. B10 means up to 10% of luminaires may fall below it, B50 up to half. L80B10 is a more demanding claim than L80B50.
Compare like with like
Only compare lifetimes quoted at the same L and B values and at the same ambient temperature. Higher temperatures shorten LED life.
Maintenance planning
- Design with a maintenance factor so light levels stay compliant over time
- Use constant light output drivers where suitable
- Choose systems with replaceable drivers and LED modules
- Test emergency lighting regularly

What does L80 mean for LED lights?
L80 means the luminaire still produces at least 80% of its initial light output at the stated number of hours.
How long do linear LED lights last?
Quality commercial linear LED luminaires are typically rated for tens of thousands of hours. Compare lifetimes at the same L and B values and temperature.
